November: Animal Care League takes over downtown Oak Park on November 4th. Sirius Cooks will be in attendance with a tent and surprises!

Chicagoland Tails is conducting their voting for the Best of... We will not push you to vote (you can only vote once), but if you wish to make Sirius Cooks a standout "Pet Boutique" you can vote here. You will need our address and city (142 Harrison, Oak Park). You can also vote for your favorite Vet, favorite day-care/boarding business, etc. There is also a choice for best Dog Bakery, and best Cat or Dog Food. We feel that we cover the span of all of them, and when they come up with the "Healthiest Dog and Cat Store" ... we're a sure bet.

The last chance to vote is on September 28th.

August sightings of the "Cooks"
We seemed to be many places, though we be two people!

We were at the Marion Street (mall) in Oak Park on August 14th for "Arts Dan La Rue." Some of your familiar faces and loyal customers stopped by to say "hi" while we were able to meet new people.

Yes, we are spoiled by our customers (and we are very grateful to you!). We don't have to explain to you about why healthy nutrition is so important, and why a dog or cat doesn't get as much out of a popular brand which is full of left-over wheat, corn or soy. Or that our Sirius Suppers are actually the healthiest home-made food out there and why actual cooking of food works best for everyone.

We were very happy to see that some of our customers listed us on Yelp.com and Angie's List (you have to be a member) AND on MeGoGreen.com. Thank you!

The Wednesday Journal featured an article on 8/12/08 about a found turtle who found his/her way into our lives and many others. Suffice it to say, there were two turtles in the end. A happy story. You can read more about it at: http://wjinc.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=12091

Backer Show in October
Where we get the products in our store ....

Twice a year, the Backer Show holds a weekend-long show of dog/cat food, treat, toys, accessories, you name it manufacturers of almost everything related to dogs and cats.

We will be working hard for your dogs and cats all three days questioning your favorite manufacturers about their products.
And though it is a 3-day event (October 3rd-5th), from 10-6pm'ish, our Number One Employee, Ken Arkow will be taking care of our store for those three days so no-one goes hungry!

Where do we get our ideas from for new products in our store? Though trade shows are helpful we also do tons of research before it enters our store. We know that isn't a finite answer, but we may be juggling communication with different producers of dog collars that are NOT on the radar-screen of major manufacturers.

They don't have major distribution.

They don't have the cheapest prices (not Made in China), but they are committed to making the best products they know how. And when you dig a little deeper, each manufacturer is doing it for the love of their own special dog(s) or cat(s).

We hear about new products from "you" (our customers), we hear about it from our favorite veterinarians, our distributors, we hear about the products from our various readings of journals, pet industry rags and animal-related magazines.

An example: One of our first customers brought in a 100% bio-degradable poop bag, made here in Illinois. She thought we should carry it. This was February. We contacted, they weren't wholesaling it. They were changing the design.... By August, six-months later, we are proud to be one of the first in the country to carry "Poop Bags" that make that "reduces your dogs carbon footprint." AND that doesn't cost a lot of money.

We are tenacious about finding some of the best products out there to improve your dogs' and cats' lives!

September on Harrison

We will be at the "Art Walk on Harrison" from September 19th - 21st. We will have "Animal Hour" on the main stage (corners of Lombard and Harrison, Oak Park, IL) between 3pm-4pm.

 * Many of you may be familiar with Meredith Leuck, animal trainer at Animal Sense. Well, she is taking the stage at 3pm to talk about "Etiquette: for you and your dog." A light-hearted look at the best ways we can introduce ourselves and our four-leggeds to each other.

* At 3:30pm, we will have an intro-session of three Rescue Organizations: As Good as Gold (Golden Retrievers), and Greyhounds Only, Inc..

* In front of our store will be Ellen Miles of Catvando with rescue kittens from Catvando that need a good home.

* We will also be announcing a new food that will be carried in our store with a representative of the company in attendance for questions, AND we will have a drawing/donation of a $15 Coupon for our store. All proceeds will benefit an animal related non-profit chosen by the winner!

* September also includes an event that takes place downtown Chicago. The Tailored Dog is the first collection designed specifically for big dogs 60 lbs and over. They will have a Trunk Show from 11-4pm on Sat September 20th at Neiman Marcus (1st Floor) on Michigan Avenue- look out for more details in the Q section of this Sunday's ChicagoTribune (9/14/08).

Sirius Cooks will be offering treats to those buyers of these fashions for their dogs. :)

Meet NBC-5’s canine personality “Puma” and experience the line of fashion-forward visors, raincoats, fleece hats and coats modeled by Hairy S. Truman, a handsome rescue dog. Owners and lovers of big dogs will appreciate the customized details, which are designed to flatter the broad figures of large dogs while protecting them from the elements.  There will be special perks for shoppers throughout the day. A portion of Tailored Dog proceeds benefit “no kill” animal shelters throughout the city and include special needs adults in the manufacturing process.

Tidbits
A bit of this and that....

Yes, we have joined the Internet Age, and have a "Sirius Blog" on our website (http://siriuscooks.com/siriusblog). We will be listing news affecting food and nutrition (and toys) as we hear about it, so check it out when you can. There is a "voluntary" recall of Mars products (Pedigree, Ol' Roy, Wegmans....) that we have listed on our site.

Recipes change, food becomes better (or worse unfortunately), so we will be constantly researching and updating our food options within the store. During these hard financial times, we all want to keep our four-leggeds as healthy and happy as possible while STILL keeping a roof over their heads.

Tip: When introducing a new food, one vet has suggested that you put a bit of it at the bottom of the bowl. This works for cats, discriminating beings that they are, sometimes like to smell something first, get used to it, and then hopefully eat it as it becomes a familiar item.

Did we tell you already?... Chicagoland Tails is conducting their voting for the Best of... We will not push you to vote (you can only vote once), but if you wish to make Sirius Cooks a standout "Pet Boutique" you can vote here. You will need our address and city (142 Harrison, Oak Park). You can also vote for your favorite Vet, favorite day-care, etc. There is also a choice for best Dog Bakery, and best Cat or Dog Food. We feel that we cover the span of all of them, and when they come up with the "Healthiest Dog and Cat Store" ... we're a sure bet.

Voting is up on September 28th!

Thanks for your time and support!
